Essential Tips for Learning a Script

As a TV Presenter it’s highly likely at some point you’ll be required to memorise a script, often at short notice. Not all TV Studios have access to a teleprompter and if you’re filming on location, teleprompters are rarely used usually because you’ll probably be walking and talking, or the camera might be so far away you wouldn’t be able to read it.

Sometimes for corporate videos and commercials they require you memorise a script. These scripts are often approved by the client and their lawyers so are required to be recited word for word. So, you will have to rely on your memory. Your memory is like a muscle, the more you practice the better you will become but knowing your script inside out will help your confidence and any nerves you get while onset.

10 Essential Tips for Learning a Script
  • The app line learner is a brilliant app you can use. You can record your script and listen to over again.
  • Read your script as many times as possible out aloud, pick out the keywords. Make sure you understand what is being said and connect with it. Building pictures or a scene in your mind.
  • Write your script out several times. Handwriting is better than typing.
  • Break your script into sections and focus on one section at a time.
  • Cover everything except the line you’re trying to memorise. Read the uncovered lines, then see if you can say them without looking.
  • Move around or go for a walk. Try and move around as much as possible when you’re learning your script. Practice your lines while doing your chores around the house or take a walk.
  • Studies have shown that learning a script before your bedtime is an effective time to learn. But don’t attempt to do this the night before your shoot!
  • Ask for the script to be sent as soon as possible. Depending on the production it might be given a week in advance sometimes it’s only given the night before.
  • On the day of the shoot keep the script with you to hand so you can keep checking it when you need to.
  • Practise, practise, practise.
