10 Jobs that can work around your presenting career

When you’re starting out as a presenter, you’ll need to gain experience and make a name for yourself before you’ll get presenting full time. So, you’ll need work that pays your rent and feeds you along the way. A flexible, part-time job that allows you to fit auditions and presenting into your schedule at short notice. This is where a good ‘survival job’ comes into play.

Although waiting tables, working in a bar, temp work and call centre jobs are all classic survival jobs, there are a lot of other options you may want to consider.

Here are 10 jobs you can do that fits around your presenting career.

Childcare:  A classic survival job if you love working with children and can pay quite well. There’s also flexibility since childcare can be full- or part-time, weekends or weekends. You’ll need to have an up to date DBS and being first aid trained can be a benefit. Ask around for personal referrals from friends and family. Also, check out your local Facebook groups.

Be a Party Character:  There are lots of jobs for entertainers at children’s birthday parties. Whether it’s dressing up as a Disney princess or working with puppets, being a magician but, you’ll also need to have an up to date DBS for this job.

Usher: Whether it’s theatre, cinema or a gallery, not only is this job flexible and part-time, it’s also industry related so might end up being a great networking opportunity.

Taxi driver: Uber are ideal for presenters or performers who wants to make their own hours. You need to be 21 years old, have a smart phone, a working vehicle, personal auto insurance, and a commercial driver’s license. You must also pass a background check and vehicle inspection.

Become a Freelancer: Do you have a skill or talent that can benefit someone? There are some great websites you can list your self on including; Upwork, Fiverr, People per hour. Some common gigs include video editing, graphic design, marketing, writing, translation, social media, and photography.

Promotional Work: Promo staff are hired to promote a product, service, business or company. Mostly hired by event management companies, shopping centres and companies choosing to promote themselves. This type of work is available via specialist agencies who will send out gigs depending on your area. Become a Brand Ambassador: Lots of companies use brand ambassadors to spread the word about their products and services. A lot of these jobs will require you to go to events to represent the company but, others will have you represent their brand through your Instagram and other social media platforms.

Virtual / Personal Assistant:  A virtual assistant is someone who does administrative, technical or creative work for hire but is not in the same place as the employer, sometimes not even in the same city. A great job that you can do on the go. Fiver and UpWork are great sites to start looking.

Tutoring or Teaching: If you’ve got a skill or knowledge of something that you can pass onto someone else, you can offer lessons. Lots of parents will pay you to give lessons to their kids for a variety of things such as playing an instrument or help with their A levels or GCSE work.
